Materials:

Two Facts and One Opinion handout, selected text, writing utensils

Description

Students read a text and then identify two facts and one opinion about the content.

Preparation

Select a short text or excerpt from Britannica School, Britannica Library, or another source related to your learning objective, theme, or unit of study.

Implementation

Distribute the selected text and a Two Facts and One Opinion handout to each student. Instruct students to read the selected text independently and identify two facts and one opinion (either an opinion from the text or an opinion of their own) from the material. Encourage students to explain how they know each statement is either a fact or an opinion. Invite two or three students to share one of their responses.

Teaching Tips

At the beginning of the activity, review the difference between facts (verifiable, evidence-based statements) and opinions (personal beliefs, judgments, or feelings).
For younger students, use texts with more obvious facts and opinions, or simplify the exit ticket to focus on identifying just one fact and one opinion.
Remind students to provide evidence or reasoning for why they classified statements as facts or opinions.

Supporting All Learners

For students needing extra support: Highlight sections of the text where facts and opinions might be found, or provide a word bank of key terms that signal opinions (believe, feel, best, worst).

For advanced learners: Challenge students to identify subtle opinions that are presented as facts or to evaluate the strength of evidence supporting factual claims.

For multilingual learners: Provide students with sentence frames or key vocabulary definitions, or allow them to use translation tools to support comprehension.
