Description

Students analyze literary devices found in song lyrics.

Preparation

Select a song that connects to your learning objective, theme, or unit of study.

Implementation

Begin by explaining that students will listen to a song twice to analyze its lyrics. First play: students only listen. Second play: display lyrics and distribute the Figurative Language in Music handout. Students identify figurative language (e.g., metaphors, similes, alliteration, repetition). End with partner sharing of analysis.

Teaching Tips

Before implementing independently, model the activity with a different song. Maintain engagement by setting clear time limits for each phase.
To extend the activity, choose one or two relevant background articles from Britannica School, Britannica Library, or ImageQuest that directly connect to your chosen song’s genre or artist. Use these articles to explore historical context and create cross-curricular connections through guided discussion and activities.
