Implementation

Distribute the #KeyIdeas handout to students. Invite them to reflect on their learning by creating three hashtags they would use to tag this lesson on social media. For example, in a unit about the American Revolution, students might create hashtags such as #BreakingFromBritain, #FightingForIndependence, or #NoTaxationWithoutRepresentation to capture key themes and concepts.

Next, have students create drawings that visually represent the themes of their chosen hashtags. Depending on the time available, students can reference Britannica School, Britannica Library, or ImageQuest for inspiration. To conclude, invite students to share their hashtags with the class, and discuss any common themes or “trending” topics that emerged from the group’s work.

Teaching Tips

  • Before students create their own hashtags, model the process by sharing your own example hashtags for a different topic or lesson.
  • Have students create a bulletin board with their hashtags and drawings, organizing them by theme or connecting related concepts with string or ribbon.

Supporting All Learners

For students needing support: Pair students with supportive peers to brainstorm main ideas and generate the hashtags.

For advanced learners: Challenge students to analyze the hashtags generated by the whole class to identify trending topics.

For multilingual learners: Encourage hashtags in both English and students’ home languages. Offer supporting text to enhance understanding of essential content.

Note: Provide accommodations and modifications based on your learners’ needs to ensure full participation.
