Implementation

Distribute the Learn It! Use It! handout and invite students to complete the handout independently, writing their thoughts in complete sentences and including specific examples from the lesson about new learnings and how they can apply them. Then have students form small groups, or turn and talk with a partner, to share their ideas, encouraging them to add new insights from their peers to their own handouts using a pen of a different color.

Teaching Tips

  • Model the process first. Take a few minutes at the beginning to demonstrate your own reflection about a recent learning experience. Think aloud as you work through each section (e.g., “When I learned about [topic], I discovered…” and “I plan to use this by…”). This helps students understand the depth of reflection you’re looking for.
  • Keep the first few uses simple and short. Start with a 3- to 5-minute lesson reflection before tackling bigger concepts. Once students are comfortable with the structure, you can use it for more complex topics or longer units.

Supporting All Learners

For students needing support: Consider providing sentence stems for each part (e.g., “Today I learned about…” and “This will help me when…”).

For advanced learners: Deepen the reflection process by adding thought-provoking questions to push students to analyze relationships between concepts, evaluate implications, and think creatively about applications. For example, ”How does this connect to what we learned last week about…?” “What patterns did you notice between…?” or “How could you combine this knowledge with…to solve…?”

For multilingual learners: Provide a bilingual word bank with key vocabulary and sentence frames in both English and students’ home languages (e.g., “Today I learned…” / “Hoy aprendí…” and “I will use this by…” / “Usaré esto para…”).

Note: Provide accommodations and modifications based on your learners’ needs to ensure full participation.
