Implementation

Explain to students that they will be previewing or reviewing key concepts related to a topic by responding to questions; their answers must begin with a specific letter selected by the teacher.

Distribute a Letter Roll Review handout to each student. Then roll or select a letter in view of the class. Have students record the topic and letter on their handouts. Tell them that their answers to each numbered question must begin with that letter.

Give students 1–2 minutes of think time to answer as many questions as they can. Then have them share their responses with a partner. Call on two or three students to share their answers with the class. Record unique responses on the visual display.

Teaching Tips

  • Boost engagement by having students read a Britannica School or Britannica Library article or analyze an image from ImageQuest using the Letter Roll Review. This will challenge students to connect the selected letter to specific content they’ve just studied, strengthening comprehension and encouraging evidence-based responses.
  • Create a word bank for challenging letters (Q, X, Z) related to your topic. To keep the game flowing while supporting learning, provide hints for these difficult letters rather than skip them.
  • Vary response methods (mini whiteboards, think-pair-share, popcorn style, digital tools) to maintain engagement during multiple rounds and to accommodate different learning styles.

Supporting All Learners

For students needing additional support: Provide a visual reference chart with topic vocabulary organized alphabetically. Allow students to work with a partner to generate answers.

For advanced learners: Challenge students to provide multiple answers for each letter or to explain connections between their answers and other key concepts from the unit. Consider having students create their own topic-related questions for letters.

For multilingual learners: Accept words that begin with the target letter in students’ home languages, encouraging students to teach the class these words. Provide visual cues alongside verbal questions, and consider creating bilingual word banks for key vocabulary.

Note: Provide accommodations and modifications based on your learners’ needs to ensure full participation.
