Implementation

Display four items and distribute to students the Odd One Out handout. Ask students to complete the handout individually by identifying which item does not belong and explaining why with supporting details.

Teaching Tips

  • When selecting items, consider using Britannica School, Britannica Library, or ImageQuest to find images or texts that align with your lesson content. Consider connecting these items to preview or review academic content.
  • To extend the activity, invite students to create their own Odd One Out example related to your current unit of study. Consider using these student-created examples the next time you use this activity.

Supporting All Learners

For students needing support: Provide sentence frames, use familiar categories, include visuals alongside text, and limit the number of items to three.

For advanced learners: Challenge students to find multiple valid reasons why different items could be the odd one out and explain their creative reasoning.

For multilingual learners: Pre-teach key vocabulary for categories being compared and allow students to explain their reasoning in their home languages.

Note: Provide accommodations and modifications based on your learners’ needs to ensure full participation.
