Implementation

Begin by telling students they will be detectives looking for clues on a book cover or picture to predict what the book might be about. Review the Picture Detective handout with students, modeling how to complete it. Share and display the book cover students will use for the activity. End with partner or whole-class clue sharing.

Teaching Tips

  • Before implementing independently, model the activity with a different book cover or picture.
  • Consider using an e-book from Britannica Fundamentals! or display a book cover found in Britannica School or Britannica Library.
  • To extend the activity, repeat over several days using books with similar themes, characters, or authors to help students build connections and strengthen predictions.

Supporting All Learners

For students needing additional support: Provide specific prompts such as “Draw the main character,” “What is the character doing?” or “What colors do you see?”

For advanced learners: Invite students to add details about what might happen in the book or why they made their predictions.

For multilingual learners: Encourage students to label drawings in their home languages, provide visual vocabulary cards for common book cover elements (e.g., character, setting, action), and pair students with peers who can model oral predictions.

Note: Provide accommodations and modifications based on your learners’ needs to ensure full participation.
