Implementation

Display the quote or write it on the whiteboard. Introduce the quote and its author, and provide context for the quote. Then distribute the Quote Analysis handout and have students complete the handout with a partner. Afterward, invite students to share their analyses with the rest of the class.

Teaching Tips

  • Choose a quote from a familiar text or a historically relevant quote, or choose multiple quotes that present varying points of view.
  • Use the selected quote to prompt students to review content from previous lessons, to draw on students’ personal experiences, or to preview upcoming material.
  • Guide students to analyze the author’s word choice, sentence structure, tone, and intention.

Supporting All Learners

For students needing support: Write guiding questions on the whiteboard to support them in their thinking process, such as “What does this quote mean to you?” or “What are some key words or sentences that you connected with?”

For advanced learners: Prepare a reading passage that contextualizes the quote and fosters deeper reflection.

For multilingual learners: Pre-teach key vocabulary words that appear in the quote and translate the quote into students’ home languages.

Note: Provide accommodations and modifications based on your learners’ needs to ensure full participation.
