Quotes That Make History handout, display, selected quote, and writing utensils

Description

Students analyze historical quotes and share interpretations and insights.

Preparation

Select a quote from a Britannica School or Britannica Library article that connects to your learning objective, theme, or unit of study.

Implementation

Display the quote and its source. Distribute the Quotes That Make History handout, and instruct students to complete the handout independently. Then facilitate a turn-and-talk with a partner, followed by a whole-class discussion to explore students’ interpretations and insights about the quote.

Teaching Tips

In earlier lessons, model quote analysis through think-alouds. Demonstrate how to identify key words, make historical connections, and uncover deeper meanings to make predictions about future events. This preparation helps students develop analytical skills before tackling their own interpretations.
For deeper exploration, guide students through reading and discussing the related Britannica School article, focusing on how it connects to and expands on the quote.

Supporting All Learners

For students needing support: Create a word bank of key historical terms from the quote to support vocabulary development and comprehension during discussion and analysis.

For advanced learners: Challenge students to analyze related quotes from the same historical figure or era to deepen their understanding of the original quote’s context.

For multilingual learners: Provide students with the quote, along with key vocabulary, in both English and their home languages. Allow initial discussions in students’ preferred language before sharing in English.
