Implementation

Tell students that to help them review they will be sketching everything they know about a topic. Distribute a Sketch and Share handout and coloring supplies to each student. Allow 4–5 minutes for students to independently draw everything they know about a given topic. Then invite students to share their sketch with a partner, asking and answering questions such as “What is your sketch about?” or “Why did you choose these colors?”

After partner discussions, invite students to complete the reflection at the bottom of the handout, sharing one new thing they learned from their partner.

Teaching Tips

  • Model the process first and set expectations by quickly sketching your own example.
  • Consider having students read an article from Britannica School or observe an image from ImageQuest and use the Sketch and Share handout as a formative assessment
  • For older students, challenge them to make connections between concepts using arrows or groupings in their sketches.

Supporting All Learners

For students needing support: Provide a simple graphic organizer with labeled sections to help students organize their sketching (e.g., boxes labeled “Most important concept,” “Key vocabulary,” “How things connect”).

For advanced learners: Challenge students to create a before-and-after sketch that shows how their understanding changed or deepened throughout the unit.

For multilingual learners: Encourage students to label their sketches in both English and their home languages, and provide students with visual vocabulary cards related to the topic.

Note: Provide accommodations and modifications based on your learners’ needs to ensure full participation.
