Implementation

Distribute a Traffic Light Feedback handout to each student along with coloring supplies. Tell students that they will color the traffic light to show how well they understood today’s lesson. Review what each light color means: red for “Stop! I don’t understand”; yellow for “Slow down! I need more help”; or green for “Go ahead! I understand.” Give students 3–4 minutes to color their chosen light. As students finish, collect the tickets at the door as they exit.

Teaching Tips

  • Model the activity by sharing your own examples of learning experiences that reflect gradients of understanding.
  • Create a quick sorting system for the exit tickets (three piles) to immediately identify which students need follow-up.
  • Use this feedback to form small groups for targeted instruction in your next lesson.

Supporting All Learners

For students needing additional support: Provide pre-colored options students can circle instead of coloring.

For advanced learners: Add a space where students can write or draw what, specifically, they understood or didn’t understand.

For multilingual learners: Include visual support tools and translations of key phrases in students’ home languages.

Note: Provide accommodations and modifications based on your learners’ needs to ensure full participation.
