Implementation

Distribute the selected text and a True or False Exchange handout to each student. Direct students to read the text carefully and then create four or five statements about the content—some true and some false. Ask students to write their statements on the main section of the handout and record the correct answers (T/F) on the answer key portion. Instruct students to hide their answer key by cutting it off or folding it behind the page. Have students exchange their handouts (without the answer keys visible) with a partner. Give students time to read their partner’s statements and mark each as true or false. After students have completed their partner responses, have them reveal their answer keys to check each other’s work. Encourage partners to discuss any incorrect answers and to provide specific evidence from the text to support the true statements or correct the false ones.

Teaching Tips

  • Encourage strategic statement creation by modeling examples of statements that are obviously true or false as well as more challenging statements that require careful reading. Show students how to craft statements that are subtly false by changing small but significant details from the text.
  • Create a quick reference guide for textual evidence by having students underline or highlight sections of the text they used for their statements. This helps during partner discussions and teaches students to directly reference the text when supporting their answers.

Supporting All Learners

For students needing extra support: Provide a guided think-aloud, and model how to generate true or false statements.

For advanced learners: Invite students to write additional questions and to vary question types (e.g., multiple choice, short answer, fill in the blank).

For multilingual learners: Allow students to use digital translation tools and bilingual dictionaries when reading the selected text.

Note: Provide accommodations and modifications based on your learners’ needs to ensure full participation.
