Implementation

Invite students to read the article or text passage aloud, either independently or with a partner. Then display a few quotes from the article or text passage, and ask students to identify who said them, reflect on their meaning, and point to the parts of the text where the quotes appear.

Teaching Tips

  • For elementary (grades 3–5) students, choose a passage from an article. For middle school (grades 6–8) students, choose a short article.
  • Print a few sets of the selected quotes for students to engage with in small groups, and use the handout for writing practice.

Supporting All Learners

For students needing support: Provide specific prompts to aid them in understanding the key events in the article or text passage, such as “What is the article or passage about?” or “Where do the events described in the article or passage take place?”

For advanced learners: Prepare written sentence strips with quotes from notable figures in history or from characters from familiar stories, and have students identify who said them and what the quotes mean.

For multilingual learners: Pre-teach key vocabulary words that will appear in the text, and use props during the reading to promote engagement and support.

Note: Provide accommodations and modifications based on your learners’ needs to ensure full participation.
